That late! They must be a bunch of jonny-come-lately pikers. Why, I
was doing this kind of stuff in 1982!

Yes, I really was designing portable hypertext presentations and
demonstrating the technology in 1982. And one of our demos called it a web
of files, as we were casting about for ANY way to make people understand
what we had. We even called the system Presentation Manager at one
point... but everyone who used it said it really was TabTalk.

Today, we would call them web sites; but these were for browsing on
the computer on which they were installed. The browser was called
TabTalk, though we hadn't named it that till 1984, when we started selling
it. It linked files and ran local programs, dialed the phone, etc. Rev 2
was being designed, it was to let you view files on other computers also
running TabTalk. The NASA version used the parallel port to control motors
via a switch symbol, [-] (closed) and ]/[ (open). We called the symbols
Tcons, or Textual Icons, and the user could type them anywhere on the
screen, and surround them with text.

The main difference from our current browsers, is that it was also a
word processor, so users could alter the text as they wished, (unless the
file was "locked") and there was no "hidden" arcane markup language. You
typed it, you got what you typed. ->filename, to link to a file or create
a new one if it was not there, C>program to run a program, etc. Tab to
the icon, ENTER to execute/view it, ESC to go back. We printed the manual
on the back of our business cards to show how simple it really was.

Natch, it was a tremendous market flop. 90% of the people didn't see
the advantage of hypertext till they actually used it for a while. While
10% of the buyers raved at how great it was, and railed that they couldn't
find other products that worked this way; we just could not get it into
any computer stores! I was almost physically assaulted by one Extremely
Angry owner who, though he very graciously invited me to show him what it
was, ran me out of his store before the demo was over, screaming and
cursing, calling me a thief who would steal all of his training business!
(A theme echoed by many store owners, most of whom later went out of
business.) The only places that carried us were a few local typewriter
shops selling Sanyo computers.

(Say, anyone have a few million in their back pocket to do a run at a
totally new computer platform that could be yet another REAL computer
revolution? I need a business and marketing team, as I am only a guy with
an idea... and know from experience that I am NOT marketing or business
savvy enough to pull it off all by my lonesome self! Ah well, just
thought I'd ask... The world is slowly creeping up on my idea. We'll have
it in another ten or twenty years even if not via me. And as with the web
browser, I will be glad just to be able to use it... But... maybe a few
of you have the wherewithall to make a few billion along the way, and the
willingness to risk failing; for nothing in life is sure, not even life
itself.)
