Netscape's web servers are inferior to Apache already; I don't think
Sun will be able to remedy that by catching up *unless* they go open-source
with them and leverage the collective brainpower of the 'net. (In which
case probably what would happen is that some Apache/Netscape hybrid will
evolve that beat the pants off both.) The Mozilla browser project is
already well underway, as are other browser projects; I think it's far
enough along that even it can stand on its on.
So I don't really care what AOL, Netscape or Sun do: it's out of their
hands, anyway, because the OSS movement is far bigger than they are
and has much larger resources to throw at the problems. I think this
whole thing is driven by the hype over "portals", by Netscape's
shakiness as a company, and by AOL's amazing ability to continue to
exist despite a seemingly endless list of technical problems.
