I am overwhelmed by the responses received within hours after my post.

Well, on the opening page of a site I try to restrict the important
contents to the top section of the page, so I really cannot follow your
suggestion in this case :>) Surely you agree that the opening page should
not vertically scroll any more than is absolutely necessary? (If only I
could get my clients to agree...)
