Tamara,
I have "ordered" or rather "pre-ordered" RADSL (or ADSL or whatever flavor
I can get) from US West, but they don't seem to be able to get their act
together to actually deploy it in my neighborhood ... So I "pre-ordered" a
cable modem from Cox as well. We'll see who gets here first.
On the one hand the Bell Atlantic announcement is really good news (Compaq
even released a supported statement praising them) and they say they will
be able to service 2 million by the end of 1998 and an additional 5 million
by the end of 1999. Since only 20 million in all of Bell-Atlantic
territory can get ISDN now, that's a pretty broad and rapid deployment ...
BUT (you knew there would be a but didn't you?) Their offerings may not
suit "future" uses of xDSL. Both the 640k and 1.3Nbps download speeds have
a "crummy" 90k upload speed. The 7.1 Mbps download speed service (at
$189/mo) sounds great, but maximum upload on even that is just 640kbps.
I vastly prefer 1.3down/1.3up, or even 768/768kbps. You can't do a
decent video-phone thing at 90k up. for instance, and sending a file to
your office, or even baby pictures to Grandma is painfully slow at 90kpbs.
Cheap install ($100) and cheap equipment ($100) should make this a popular
offering though.
Just as a comparison, flat-rate ISDN in Arizona (for local calls only, but
unlimited) is currently $180/mo for 128kbps dual (bonding 2) channels.

Some new DSL service is supposed to be rolling out in San Jose (CA USA) in
June or July (i.e. probably not till September). We're seriously
considering
signing up. One article I read said costs could be as low as $89 per month
(depending on location across the USA), which beats the pants off the cost
of our fractional T1.
Anyone else thinking about going to ADSL? Anyone already using DSL or ADSL?
