aggghhhhh... I;ve been trhoug that one.... it's a nightmare.... i talked to
Compaq and listen good what they told me " Compaq computers are no Hard
Drive Upgradable" to tell you the truth i couldn't beleive it... so i was
left by my self... pretty much the only solution you got there is put your
new HD as a slave Drive... otherwise you will have a hard time upgrading the
BIOS... to start the BIOS is partly loaded in the HD in a very small
partition I think 2 Mb in size.... (I always thought 8Mb was the minimum)
anyway... In the COmpaq BIOS there is a make a diagnostic and setup disks in
the menu... you are suppose to do that to installed a new HD and then run
those disks in the new HD but it disn't work because my drive wasn't a 1.6
Gb HD....
well a very long story after Compaq tech support i had to solve the problem
myself and i did by doing a slave drive of the 8 Gb HD.... it worked well,
since the 1.6 HD was kinda bad... i did a small partition and a big one and
didn't format the big one didn't conflict either... i worked give it a try
buying a new Mother board is way to expensive from Compaq... otherwise get
the CD ROM and other things and get yourself a clone....
hope this help you some

Subject: WC:>: OT: PC upgrade questions

OK, gang, I have a used compaq deskpro, pentium 100, 32 MB, 1 gig. I have
no idea what BIOS because when you boot - compaq has conveniently
eliminated that screen (?). I do get MSCDEX 2.25 and SBOS 1.45 in the
dos-like section of win95 startup.

I have a new 8 gig IDE drive and have been told that i'd probably need to
upgrade the bios for the system to read it.

I have RedHat and Apache. And Cold Fusion Studio. THis is just for
development, not for web serving. CF Appl server needs a web server and I
want an in-house dev environment.

I also have to upgrade Win95 because CF said so when I tried to start the
program -- something in windows is too old [i didn't write down the error
message] and I don't get my little icons for B, I, etc. And Access isn't
working either. Sigh.

OK - here go the questions:

1) How do i figure out what deskpro model I have and what BIOS i have? i've
scoured the compaq site to no avail.

2) I've been told BIOS upgrades are ~$100 -- yes no maybe? i don't even
know where you go to GET one. compaq? msft?

3) Does a MB upgrade include BIOS? I can get MBs here in seattle for $80
up, depending on manufacturer. can you put a new MB in a compaq?

4) Or do I shrug and spend $600 on a clone system and just keep the
monitor? [i really DON"T want to do this]

5) How does one set up a wintel machine to dual boot, windows and linux?
