>From Benton-Communications

I think anyone who wishes to have a choice of ISP over their cable line needs to write
the FCC a letter. I plan to -- since I'm in TCI (ATT) territory. And the experience
I've had with TCI over the past week leaves me wondering if they can even *pronounce*
the word "service."

FCC UNLIKELY TO FORCE UNBUNDLING
Issue: Regulation
The Federal Communications Commission continues to battle over whether to
keep open the option of adopting unbundling requirements for cable in the
future. Some telephone companies and Internet service providers have argued
that a few cable companies will control the future of the Internet if the
FCC does not step in and require them to give rivals access to their
high-speed pipelines. The agency has, for now, agreed to not force cable
companies to open their broadband networks to Internet competitors.

On Thursday, the Commission will deliver a report to Congress, which will
include a recommendation for continued monitoring of the broadband rollout.
While FCC Chairman William Kennard and Commissioner Susan Ness remain
supportive of leaving open the possibility of future unbundling regulations,
Commissioner Harold Furchtgott-Goth disagrees, saying the agency has no
authority to regulate Internet services. Commissioners Gloria Tristani and
Michael Powell remain uncertain how far the agency should go.
