Here, here.
One of my addresses recently got on one of those lists I get 14 mails a
day for (buy 2M addresses for $995). The address started *averaging* 17
spams an evening (between 10 pm and 6 am).
Had to drop the address completely--that's utterly ridiculous.
Ironically, the most recent mailing I got was one about how they have
"3M registered domain owner's email addresses for marketing web-related
services to".
I went to Internic to drop them a nasty note (again) about their refusal
to keep the spiders out of their system, and lo and behold, I get an
advertisement on the way there FROM Network Solutions saying "getting
too much spam? get your own dot com address!" Idiots.
Isn't there some way to write some code for sendmail that does an
address verification before accepting the message? I'm willing to bet
90% of the people I *want* to get email from have finger-able accounts.
Can't we use one of the ident protocols to check email on the way in?
What about a script that allows one to accept a set of addresses . . .
the first time a message comes from a new address, it immediately sends
out an email to the sender--"You're not on my list, if this email did in
fact come from a human, reply to this to get added to my acceptance
list." If no reply comes back in 7 days, it trashes the message. If a
confirmation comes in, it passes the message and adds the address to the
accept list.
Or, what about a mailform script that allows you to pick a unique
variable to replace the email address. Right now, generic mailforms
want the address in the form to allow you to specify a new address for
each form. Perhaps a config file that simply allows you to select
"address 1" for routing from the form (to make it easy), but pulls the
actual address from a cgi-bin shielded config file that has the real
address list in it?
There's *got* to be a way we can figure out a way to make the net safe
for webmasters ;)
I'm just an idea rat . . . what do the code geeks have to say?
