I agree with Suzanne here.
I think it is simply the nature of the business.
No one just drops in and talks with a dentist or doctor about perhaps
doing this or that. That is usually done during a paid visit. As
the doctor/dentist examines and is on the clock then a discussion
could occur about pulling that tooth or tucking those cheeks.
How many of us charge (not talking about how much) to just discuss
projects???? This is one reason why I decided to take a job. You
can easily waste a lot of time just trying to help the client
understand what it is they really want. If you don't charge for that
then how do you get paid? By increasing your rates to accomodate for
the "disorganized factor"?
Perhaps if I had a receptionist who took appointments at US$200 an
hour to just talk, welll ... then I might bill later. The client
knows up front that just walking into the office will start the
billing clock.
I recall a job I got last year. The guy who gave me the job told me
that he got the job because another web development company required
US$5000 from the client before they would even talk. This web
development company was hosting the clients site but the client
wanted to improve it. The client wanted to know how much it would
cost. The answer ... "US$5000 to just think about it". :):).. They
didn't get the job but I can understand where they were coming from.

about in this world, and something has to be done about it.
