I gather the Association wants me to talk about the many and
confusing methods of compressing/encoding files for transmission over
the net, on diskette, as e-mail attachments, and so on. This would
entail topics like Base64, Binhex, MIME, ZIP, etc etc.

I'm kind of rusty on a lot of this stuff... any suggestions for good
reference sites on such topics? Doesn't have to be just PC, by the
way... Mac, Unix and other info gladly accepted.

I'm certainly no expert but can tell you a little about Macs: the most
popular method is Stuffit, and easiest way to send files is as a
self-extracting archive, or .sea file. Mac users can also make and decode
zip files using Zipit, but I've not had much luck making zip files for use
on PCs. As I recall, the main problem was that I was never able to figure
out how to prevent Zipit from truncating file names to 8.3. Finally found it
easier just to have a friend with a Mac and a PC do it for me. And of course
can now do it myself now that I've bought a PC.

Biggest, peskiest problem we've had for years is sending comp files of album
covers to musicians, most of whom are AOL users. (AOL is best for them
because many of them are on the road much of the time.) We finally just gave
up and started posting stuff on Web pages for them to view instead of trying
to send attachments. The unencoding or unbinhexing or whatever it is that
you have to do is just to much for them to handle. Another workaround for
AOL that I've used is to have the user open a temporary free email account
on Eudora Mail so they can read attachments without them getting munched by
AOL.

Hope that helps,
