5K for an e-commerce site? How about $360 a year?
If you really want to MAKE money taking orders on the net, sure it
can be expensive to make a lot of fancy pages, with graphics and photos
and forms.
Is that it?
How about SAVING money on the web? I have a lot of clients who just
put up price lists, poor quality typed information, lunatic tracts on life
philosophies, etc.
Why? When they get a call for a catalog or literature, their staff
is trained to ask "Do you have access to the web?" and give the URL of the
catalog or specific piece of literature. That is about a ten to thirty
second phone conversation that saves a dollar or two worth of postage and
labor, and gets the customer at the literature in minutes,. while he or
she is still on the same train of thought.
Then the customer calls back on the 800 number and places the order
the same day, rather than forgetting in a day or four why he or she wanted
that information, or putting that information on that pile of stuff to
never read.
Is that good use of the web? Yes.
Is that the best they can do? Probably not, but certainly better
than nothing, and a step along the slow road to webification.
