I have mixed feelings about java chat programs. I've had to implement
several of these. One of my clients has a substantial percentage of
WebTV-ers in their audience, and java chat is basically inaccessible to
them. My solution has been to implement *two* chats. One is java-based -
Volano chat. Another is STRAIGHT html/text. Harks back to early web days -
to see new messages, you have to click a "more" button. The upside? It
works EVERYWHERE. Practically EVERYONE can use it. It's fast, low on server
resources, easy to set up. I find it's getting more usage than the java
chat apps, which tend to crash even those whose browsers can handle java.

Hope this helps!
