I have a client who wants to do a project that involves having users upload
some extremely sensitive data via the web. They are very concerned about the
security of this information, not only keeping the information confidential
but also reassuring their clients (for whom they are doing the project) that
there is no possibility the information will be compromised. The problem is not
the user to web server connection, everyone agrees that this part is adequately
handled by secure http (assuming it is appropriately set up). The problem is
what happens to the data after it reaches the server.
Their current ISP is fairly disorganized and conversations with them has
only convinced my client that they will never be comfortable setting this
project up where they have their normal web pages.
My question is this: does anyone have suggestions for hosting service(s)
who (1) will provide a secure webserver with CGI capability (possibly using
a digital certificate from my client), (2) will carefully limit who can possibly
have access to the machine involved, (3) will carefully control access to any
backup media covering the server in question and be willing to destroy the
backups after the data has been recovered by my client, (4) will cooperate
in providing my client with a secure method of retrieving the data (possibly
encrypted ftp access), (5) who is willing to document the arrangements involved
and provide this to my client, and (6) can be trusted?
This can't be too different from the requirements some folks have for
ecommerce except maybe for the excessive lengths that my client wants to go (but
then, given the nature of the data, maybe it isn't excessive). However, this is
not an ecommerce application. There are no monetary transactions involved.
I apologize for the cryptic references to the nature of the data involved,
but I can't disclose anything about my client's project. Thanks for any
suggestions.
