On FreeBSD-5.3/4:

Apps that don't do much crunching don't benefit as much from 64
bit arch as those that do, e.g. heavy lifter database servers. One
reason why the quads are so popular with the SAP crowd (ever check out
the benchies?)

I did some quick tests compiling my fave apps a while back and don't
recall getting any errors comiling Cyrus/SASL2. FBSD allows you to
set flag not to install/use 32 libs but I don't think I had to do
anything special. It's been a long while since I "did" Linux but
suspect there may be similar knob. One would expect Cyrus/ SASL2 would
be pretty 64bit clean since the CMU favors Solaris boxes. (Suggest you
pay close attention to your network and raid drivers though because
many that claim to be 64bit clean are in fact not.)

If you're open to experimentation you may want to give FBSD a try. Use
the amd64 port and if that doesn't work retreat and run 32 bit under
the i386 port. The AMD's still rock. For web/mail server I don't
think you'll notice too large a real world difference.

I've got another dual Opteron machine I'm bringing online next few
days. I'll build Cyrus/SASL2 while I'm at it and let you know how it
goes.

My general impression of dual Opteron boxes is that they totally kick
ass and I think you'll be a pretty happy camper once you get them
dialed in. What did you get?

A: Why is putting a reply at the top of the message frowned upon?
