I use pam_mysql 0.6 and indeed saslauthd is quite busy. I am a little afraid 
of using -n 0 ... My be I just restart saslauthd daily.

Sorry, my post wasn't really clear: Stock Kernel, all available 
security/update patches installed up to date.
