Yes - and it took me quite a while to find the reason: The problem was the 
default Collation in MySQL. On my SUSE 9.3 it was set to  latin1_swedish_ci 
while the Web-Cyradm install script left this field empty. Pear didn't like 
this and this made the search unusable. I had to edit the tables/fields by 
hand, set it to latin1_bin. This solved the problem.
