have you thought about binary Mails? If the MTA must encode the Mail with 8bit (and he dit it if you send a PDF or any other binary Stuff!) then he encodes the Mail with 8bit and needs the doubled space for the mail. ie if the mail is 1mb big and has a PDF in it, then the Space must be set up to 2048 bytes to get this Mail through the Mailbox. Check the user and domain quota and the mailboxsize to fit these needs.
