Hi Stuart,
i am running SLES9_64bit. Meanwhile i found out what problem i have but i don't know how to solve it. I didn't compile mysql i installed a rpm for SLES9_64bit because i am not expert with linux. I get this message in the log from mysql:
061110 10:01:20 9 Connect Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client
10 Connect Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client
can you give me a tipp to solve this problem??

What distro are you running?
What is the output of /var/log/messages and/or /var/log/secure?
Most likely that your admin login isn't auth'ing correctly... or not at all.
