So i guess the best idea is to do it again, get the cvs Version 0.55, which has several errors fixed which where in 0.54 - still wonder why there is no further release.. Well does not matter. Install pear, install the db package. Check where the package is (i have my DB.php in SOMEPATH/php-5.2.0/php/lib/php/DB.php) Important: If you use open_basedir check whether SOMEPATH/php-5.2.0/php/lib is included, otherwise it won't work. I would not edit the files as long as the thing is not working. You can get it to work with the files distributed (more ore less everyone has) and should try to cure the cause not the symptoms. I had once problems because DB.php was not "reachable" because of the open_basedir, so check that!
