I'm not an IRC person so I may be off the mark but I agree with
seeker.

I think that when people post to the forum they know it's going to be
there "forever" and take time to describe/reason/justify their points
and  that tends to make the points more useful and weeds out the gut
reactions.  Would IRC be more like a telephone call where speed of
response/spontaneity is primary and there would be a lower signal-to-
noise ratio?
