Ok.

I changed:

f db(db.student.id==t2.person_id).select():
        form=t2.update(db.student,db.student.id==t2.person_id)

to this:

f db(db.student.t2id==t2.person_id).select():
        form=t2.update(db.student,db.student.t2id==t2.person_id)

where t2id is the id that needs to take the t2.person_id.

never mind - i think i can just put that in the form when it comes up, i.e.

<input name=t2id type=hidden value={{db.t2.person_id}}>

or something like that.
