Well for a platform to become viable the people who build it need to get paid somehow, certainly until you get a critical mass of developers who can contribute on their own time. I don't know Massimo's situation but I'm guessing he isn't funded by any huge companies to develop this and $12 for an e-book is A LOT less than a MSDN subscription.
