[web2py] How to get request.args from an index() function?

I can't get the request.args from an index function.

E.g.: within app 'fruit' I have a controller 'salad', like so:

# web2py/applications/fruit/controllers/salad.py
def index()
    print request.args
    return dict()

# curl -X GET localhost/fruit/salad/foo

# web2py console output:
[]

How to get request.args from an index() function?
