I seem to remember doing something like this once - worth a try:
if not 'view' in request.args:
db.CodeMaster.Code_Example.readable = False
db.CodeMaster.Code_Example.writable = False
else:
db.CodeMaster.Code_Example.readable = True
db.CodeMaster.Code_Example.writable = False
