On my production boxes, every upgrade of any kind starts like so:
mkdir rollback/<today's date>
In the admin app, clean the application
sudo apache2ctl stop
tar -cvzf rollback/<today's date>/current_version.tar.gz
/home/www-data/web2py/
sudo apache2ctl start
