After further investigation I've found what triggers this problem for me.

If you have several virtualhosts in apache, on the same IP:PORT, each 
running from their own web2py folder, you can get this problem.
  
For instance, you only have 2 subdomains
  
foo.example.com
bar.example.com
  
for foo.example.com you define the virtual host for port 80 and for port 443
  
for bar.example.com you only define the virtual host for port 80
  
By mistake you try to go to https://bar.example.com/admin, you will 
actually be going to the admin for 'foo' as it is listening in 443. 
  
Verify that you now have stupid session errors.

So apparently, this seems to be an apache configuration problem and one 
needs to configure it properly
