Don't spend time on this any longer. I found the problem.

Somehow in a different schema in the postgresql database there were two
empty tables:auth_group and auth_membership.  The real ones were in the
'Public'  schema.

I dropped them and now session is picking up the correct groups again.

I came across this while reviewing the database setup in order to optimise
it.

It is a complex system with nearly more than 130 tables.
