Dan,
Removing the readable=False and writable=False from your model to a
custom controller from which you call update on the crud object should
solve the problem. For example:
@auth.requires_membership('manager')
def update_company():
...
db.company.status.writable=False
...
form=crud.update(db.company,...,next=(URL
(r=request,f='update_company')),deletable=False)
return dict(form=form)
