I'm also experiencing these problems installing on Ubuntu 14.04 as well for the past few days. I've followed all the steps on different tutorials and I still can only get the Apache default page. I was doing this to get a better knowledge of building web apps and I don't have much knowledge of Apache. Based on this thread, I'm going to spin up a server with a different OS to avoid the issues.
