I'm not sure we can say there are exactly 12 (depends on how you define "core"), but that probably refers to the global objects listed here <http://web2py.com/books/default/chapter/29/04/the-core#API>, minus most of the HTML helpers and all the validators. So, minimally: request, response, session, cache, T, redirect, HTTP, DAL, and Field; and you would probably also include URL, XML, SQLFORM (including .factory, .grid, .smartgrid), and LOAD.
