Is you LOAD() in view surrounding with a div? like so :

<div id="my_load_component_div'>
LOAD(...)
</div>

Then response.js = 'web2py_component("%(URL)s","my_load_component_div"' %
{'URL': URL(Off the component)} should works just fine in your use
scenario...
