okay, seems like "selectable" might be one way to go
form = SQLFORM.smartgrid(db.InternalMessageRecipient, selectable=lambda ids:
redirect(URL('sendGroupEmails', vars=dict(ids=ids)))
it allows user to select a group of email recipients from grid. Was able
to pass selected ids to another function.
If anyone has better way, please let me know
