.... You can run linux in virtualbox, of course.
But if you will install linux from iso file, all modern distirbutions will
lead you to split the windows disk. If you are a windows man, you can let
more space for windows (400G ?) and less for linux (100G ?). You will then
have the windows partition automatically mounted (linux don't use logical
disks like c:, d:, but has a single tree started at '/', and other
connected disks will appear in /mnt or in /media or in other place which
you decide to use for the windows partition at the linux installation -
usually this hapen automatically without need to use the manual command
called 'mount' later).
So, you will see the windows partition in linux and you can use files from
the windows partition (pictures, video, music, pdf, of course,.. but not
only: doc, xls and so, which can you edit with LibreOffice).
And it is possible run windows exe files through wine - but I think this is
not great idea and you will preffer reboot into windows in such case.
I am beginner in linux too (as people can see from my comments), so
following is more from what other say:
Maybe Debian is better choice as Ubuntu, for me it is something like
Windows-Professional / Windows-HomeEdition. But both is great and better
than windows.
For outdated hardware (like older netbooks) you will get good results with
Lubuntu.
It is good to receive software updates sometimes (in linux this updates OS
together with other used software),
in Debian:
change the user to aministrator ('su' command),
set configuration file with software updates sources (google for this),
aptitude update
aptitude full-upgrade
With 'aptitude' without parameters you can find and install new software
(packages).
