I am not sure about this trick because I didn't test it. Though, in web2py/gluon there is this file welcome.w2p... If not there it get recreated if not there... I don't remember the behavior exactly... But I think that this app is the one that is used as the template when you create a new app (which is base on welcome)... So, I think you could just copy/paste this app install it in web2py and modify it at you convenience and export you mod app back... I guess you have to name it welcome.w2p it order to prevent web2py from recreate a new one... My assomption is that if you put your modified app in place of this one (the one without the bunch of cruft) you will start from a fresh app environnement with the sane default that you want without having to remember what to remove every time. An other option, could be to modified the deployed welcome and delete the welcome.w2p and I think it will be replaced by a freshly packed welcome app base on the welcome app include in web2py but that you had modified... Symlinks can be helpful in order to keep track of differents version of "customized" default welcome app that you may require.
