As I said, DAL was included into web2py before it was put aside in another repository which now need to be retrieve with git clone recursive command as explained on the landing page...
For the older version, DAL should be included so you shouldn't need clone --recursive, the only thing you need to do is to select the proper tag version, then download or clone it then checkout to the proper tagged version...
