Thanks! I somehow was under the impression that the old way of using cache is somehow deprecated. I re-read the book again, and there is just a statement "We recommend @cache.action <http://web2py.com/books/default/chapter/29/04/the-core?search=cache#markmin_cache_action> starting from web2py > 2.4.6". But since this is not possible with cache.action, I will try using the cache.ram.
