It is because the ajax call is built at the time the page is rendered and
not when the javascript function executes. Instead of building the
parameters into the URL string, I've done this:
$.ajax({url: "{{=URL('default', 'my_action')}}",
async: false,
data: {value=String(value)}});
This uses the jquery ajax function.
NOTE: Not tested....
