First, looks like you are just re-implementing the recursive selects 
functionality:

Also, why bother with the join if you are only selecting fields from one table?

Finally, before continuing down this path, have a look at virtual fields (
http://web2py.com/books/default/chapter/29/06/the-database-abstraction-layer#Virtual-fields),
 which is the standard way to do such things with the DAL.
