Thanks for your reply.
.register already calls .validate - you cannot call it twice (by design,
> the CSRF token survives only one validation).
I solved it by replacing form = auth.register() with:
form = SQLFORM.factory(db.auth_user,
Field('password_two', type='password', requires =
IS_EQUAL_TO(request.vars.password,
error_message='passwords do not match')))
