Some people here seem to use the "multiple forms per page" thing, and then 
jquery/ajax to submit each part.  I think I've even seen something similar 
discussed here to prepare an autocomplete of one form by popping another.

You can do much of it in javascript if the list of choices doesn't change 
much.  You still have to validate the selection on the server side, but 
making the selection can be primarily a client activity, cutting down on 
total transit time.
