Simply replacing the get_status function in the module of the controller
should work.
Something like:
import mycontroller
def dummy_get_status(foo):
print foo
#setup
old_get_status = mycontroller.get_status
mycontroller.get_status = dummy_get_status
# run test
mycontroller.do_something()
# teardown
mycontroller.get_status = old_get_stattus
