I suggest

def table_as_xml():
      from gluon.serializers import xml
      response.headers['Content-Type']='text/xml'
      return '''<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
             '''+"<itemlist>%s</itemlist>" % xml(db(db
[request.vars.id].id>0).select().as_list())

and

 http://www.test.com/myapp/default/table_as_xml.xml?id=1
