Have you tried with javascript?
If the selectbox has an id should be simple accomplish your goal.
For example:
<script>
document.getElementById('listofvalues').value='3';
</script>
sets as selected the option with value = '3' in the following selectbox.
<select name="listofvalues" id="listofvalues">
<option value="1">Value 11</option>
<option value="2">Value 22</option>
<option value="3">Value 33</option>
<option value="4">Value 44</option>
<option value="5">Value 55</option>
</select>
