As noted here <http://web2py.com/books/default/chapter/29/07/forms-and-validators#smartgrid-signature>, smartgrid takes the same arguments as grid. For customizing the grid, check out http://web2py.com/books/default/chapter/29/07/forms-and-validators#SQLFORM-grid (in particular, look at the "ui" argument).
