Actually, update_or_insert does *not* return the ID in case of an update. If you need the ID, then don't use update_or_insert but instead write your own logic (the method is fairly simple -- see https://github.com/web2py/pydal/blob/c954d1a22a0b83d90f728a4ab2daaa954e3f16c8/pydal/objects.py#L822).
