Even I have been be with web2py for more than 18 months, I still feel somewhat difficult to catch up with the web2py evolution. So you are not alone, Mr. BG. :-) After all, it is good that web2py grows up fast. :-)
And yes I also like the idea of providing a fancy scaffolding app and a minimal one. Actually I keep a copy of the old "welcome" app and derive most of my trial app from it. So an easy approach should be also packing the old "welcome" app in the standard web2py release build, but name it "minimal". Hope Massimo like this suggestion.
