Funnily enough this is something that I've just started looking at as well :) Ext's UI seems so superior even than dataTables with jEditable. Great to use Web2Py as more than just a great JSON/XML adapter & create Ext widgets from the Model (critically, including validation) like we have for HTML. I was looking along the lines of option 3, but great to have eyes opened to other possibilities :) I wasn't aware of option 2, which looks at 1st sight like a great way forward...if thisd works at all, then surely it's limitations can be supplemented with some elements of either option 1 or 3? - this doesn't need to be an exclusive approach...
