webfaction - shared hosting - means all you need to worry about is your application. If your traffic is realtively low, this is really easy.
VPS is cloud hosting, so not sure what the setup is - but you can probably expect to be root on your own linux slice. Massimo will be able to say if he had to configure Apache, or how far it came preconfigured. It does look like the sweet deal for entering the cloud.
