High Performance Computing Facility Manager
About the Job

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is an Independent 
Administrative Institution established by the Government of Japan. Its aim is 
to establish a world-class university of science and technology in Okinawa. 
English will be the language of instruction and a large segment of the faculty 
and student population will be international. Currently, 23 Principal 
Investigators and a total of more than 200 scientists, students, and research 
support staff are located in OIST facilities in Uruma and Onna, Okinawa. OIST 
is presently constructing a new permanent campus in Onna village, where there 
will be a major expansion of research support and the establishment of the 
University in 2012.
The High Performance Computing (HPC) facility comprises two commodity clusters 
plus a number of specialized machines. Further expansions are planned. The HPC 
facility is a part of the IT section.

Responsibilities:
OIST is seeking an experienced manager of high-performance computing systems. 
The manager leads a small team of HPC support personnel but is ultimately also 
responsible for the HPC systems management.

This position requires managing, and if needed, providing system administration 
and technical support to faculty, students and research staff at OIST who wish 
to use high performance computers. The manager is directly responsible for the 
life cycle management of the HPC research infrastructure, including preparation 
of bids and acceptance testing and benchmarking. The manager overviews the job 
scheduling, HPC programming and systems analysis tasks, the maintenance of new 
software on HPC of various architectures and operating systems and the support 
of users in application development and migration of software systems to the 
HPC cluster environments.

Qualifications:
BS or MS degree in science or engineering, and at least 6 (BS) or 3 (MS) years 
of Unix and Linux experience. Experience managing or collaborating with 
technical staff and/or exposure to HPC systems or datacenters.

Candidates should have experience in high-performance research computing and 
in-depth understanding of the following: hardware architectures, queuing 
systems and schedulers; networking infrastructure issues and storage solutions 
related to HPC; system tuning, and data backup and security issues.

Other desirable skills include familiarity with grid computing; application 
software configuration; compilers; parallel libraries; knowledge of high-level 
scripting languages such as Python and Perl; proficiency in project planning 
and project management; ability to work independently as well as collaborate 
with end users and other system administrators.

Excellent communication skills in English. Japanese language skills are a plus.
