I think defaulting to case insensitive would be a good idea as well. For a while I wanted to stick with the specification which calls for email servers to be case sensitive for email addresses but I think for practical reasons case insensitive makes a lot of sense where [email protected] is equivalent to [email protected].
Actually gmail makes bob.hope@gmail equivalent to [email protected] as well.
