This seems to be an issue with the 1.98.1 install. I tried the experimental online upgrade from to 1.97.1 and on restarting web2py I got the same NameError message. Downloaded a fresh OSX binary of 1.98.1 from the website and got the same error.
Mac OSX 10.6.8 1.97.1 still works fine without an issue
